What is God's will for conception? And can we really answer this question with confidence?
Although we may not know the specific reason of why someone has been unable to conceive, the Bible gives us some clear answers and in this article I will share what the Word says in regards to conception as well as share my own experience and personal revelation on this subject.
For those of us who need a quick answer here is the simple biblical answer: Yes, it is always God’s will for us to be fruitful and multiply. I can say this with confidence because it is written in the Word. It was one of the first instructions that God gave to us:
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” – Genesis 1:27-28
This was said to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, a perfect place that had no death or pain, labor or hardships. This was said back when the world was perfect. For us as redeemed believers in Christ what this verse shows us is that this was God’s original will for us. It was God’s will for us in as pure form as it could be.
But here is where this simple answer gets complicated…
YES! It is true that it is always God’s will for us to walk in life and YES it was our original purpose to be fruitful and multiply. But since then a lot of things have changed. We were cursed at the Fall and then years later were redeemed through God’s son Jesus. But even after our redemption the world stayed the same. So even though we can clearly see God’s will in the Scripture, there are things in this world that may keep us from experiencing God’s will here on this earth.
The good news is that thanks to Jesus we can overcome this world through the power of His Name and by putting our trust in His Word…
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” – Romans 10:17
“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33
Thanks to Jesus we can have life and freedom and peace. Because of Him we can be healed and delivered from barrenness or brokenness or death. Praise Jesus! We can be healed and delivered in His mighty name!
This is good news for all of us no matter what our physical condition or circumstance. But I do understand that we all want certainty for ourselves. We want to know that this is God’s will for us. We want to know this truth in an experiential way. We want to know and see His life for ourselves…
My Personal Experience...
Just this past Christmas season of 2014 I was seeking to know God’s will for ME. Some of you may have the same questions right now that I had just a few months ago…
What about me? Is it God’s will for me to be pregnant…right now? Am I not conceiving because it’s just not His perfect timing? How do I know His will for me?
You see back in 2011 when Matt and I first decided to start a family we had asked God to take authority over my womb again and to give us children when He sees fit. We asked Him to open and close my womb in the same way He did in the Old Testament. We understood that God knew what lay ahead for us as a family so we chose to place our trust in Him and have Him determine when our children are born. And this past Christmas season I had forgotten about this covenant that we had made. I had grown so eager to have another baby, so much so that it made me forgetful of our covenant that we had made back then. I wanted a baby so desperately that I ran with the first sign that I might be pregnant, was fully convinced, but then was heartbroken and disappointed when it ended up not being so. It felt like I lost a baby.
After that disappointment I had A LOT of questions. I wondered why I was not pregnant. I wondered why I would have had a desire for a baby but then not see it come to pass. Most mommies or mommies in waiting would agree with me that this waiting can be the worst. During this time I did not experience God’s peace, I was confused and I struggled to understand God’s will for me in this area of conception. I knew God’s will for us was to be fruitful but why was I not? I also knew that I could just command my body to come in line with the Word and receive His life and be fruitful but I did not feel comfortable doing so, not being sure if it was His will FOR ME. Was I keeping a blessing from us as a family because I was not taking authority over my body? Or was it God’s will for us to not be pregnant right now? And if so, then why did I have this strong desire?
Now some of you may be saying that God already has authority over our bodies. Well, Matt and I believe and understand the Bible to say that God gave us authority and dominion over this world, just as we read back in Genesis 1:27-28. We see that God had commanded us to be fruitful and that He had given us dominion over this world. We have had authority since the beginning of creation and since then all of us have walked it out in some form or fashion. Some of us take contraceptives while others use natural alternatives. But the truth is that we have all been deciding when we should have babies or not. And this is rightly so. This is what God intended.
But since Matt and I made the covenant with God back in 2011 I had to be reminded of that again. I did not feel comfortable just commanding my body to come in line with the Word, because we had chosen to trust God to give us our children in His perfect time. It was a conversation with Matt and my parents that reminded me to trust God’s timing again. They reminded me that we chose to place our trust in the Lord and that God was faithful and that He was going to honor this. God knew the best time for us. I just had to remind myself of that again. I had to trust Him again. Once I saw this, peace was restored and I understood why I had not become pregnant yet. It was not time yet.
It has been a month since this happened and all through this time I have had peace. There was no more confusion and no more doubt. I know that YES it is God’s will for us to have another baby, but I also know that there was something that only God knew about that kept us from conceiving at this time. In my heart I think I know what it was, but only time will testify as to what His great reason was.
But is it God's Will for me?
This is my story though, not yours. This was my reason for not conceiving, what is yours? What is God’s will for you?
We have heard God’s will on conception. And we now know that this is His will for all of us as He is not a respecter of persons (Acts 10:34; Romans 2:11). Most of you may have just been planning your babies at your right time and you believe that now is the right time. Well, I believe that this is perfectly fine. It is always God’s will for us to be fruitful. For you it would be good to take authority over your body and command it to be in good health and ability to be fruitful in Jesus’ mighty name.
If you are not conceiving at this time there may be things that are keeping you from God’s blessing. You may have some lack in your body or some physical limitation. Become still and hear what the Holy Spirit speaks to you in regards to this. And then act in obedience and in faith accordingly.
Know this, that you can always be sure that it is always God’s will for us to be fruitful. No matter what our age, God’s blessing is not conditional! For some of you there may be some things that have to change or improve or be renewed or healed in order for you to conceive. Or it may also be that it is not yet God’s perfect timing for you. No matter what, we can know this, that in order for us to receive His will and walk in His will in this world WE ALL have to walk by faith – not by sight or in our own ability and what we can see and feel, understand or perceive – but instead as Christ-followers we are to walk in Christ’s ability and strength and power.
What if There is Lack?
Yes, it is true that sometimes there are physical short-comings that keep us from walking in God’s blessing, but it is never ever His will for us to be barren.
To the mommies who are experiencing lack at this very moment, here is the truth: The Bible says that God causes the barren to be blessed and to increase.
As woman in Christ we can trust God’s Word and trust that it is for us…
“Sing, O barren, you who have not borne! Break forth into singing, and cry aloud, you who have not labored with child! For more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married woman,” says the Lord.
“Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; do not spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes. For you shall expand to the right and to the left, and your descendants will inherit the nations, and make the desolate cities inhabited.
“Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed; neither be disgraced, for you will not be put to shame; for you will forget the shame of your youth, and will not remember the reproach of your widowhood anymore. For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is His name; and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; He is called the God of the whole earth.
For the Lord has called you like a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, like a youthful wife when you were refused,” says your God. “For a mere moment I have forsaken you, but with great mercies I will gather you. With a little wrath I hid My face from you for a moment; but with everlasting kindness I will have mercy on you,” says the Lord, your Redeemer.“
For this is like the waters of Noah to Me; for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah would no longer cover the earth, so have I sworn that I would not be angry with you, nor rebuke you. For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but My kindness shall not depart from you, nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has mercy on you.” – Isaiah 54:1-10 NKJV
A God Intervention...
What I have shared here is the truth about God’s will for conception. It is His will and life for us in Christ. This is part of His redemption. But for some mommies life may not have turned out this way. If this is you, you may feel condemned by this article because you never did experience this part of His life. I want you to know this, God does love you. He does take care of you. Your heart’s desires does matter to Him. You may have seen this through Him meeting you where you could receive from Him. The truth is, God always meets us where we are.
Some of us may have found redemption in adoption or have been through fertility programs and were able to conceive, even though it was after a long and hard journey. Know this, in this life we may have difficulties and we may have loss, but that does not mean that the struggles you have had was God’s will for you. It was not His will but in it all He is indeed our Redeemer. He is your Redeemer. He is the lover of your soul.
As I finish this article I can say with certainty that our Lord is faithful. I have read in His Word, and seen and experienced in this life that He is indeed the One who gives Life. He cares. He provides. He comforts. He strengthens. And He pours out His richest blessings upon us His beloved children… Yesterday I found out that now is indeed His perfect time for us to conceive. I am four weeks pregnant with our third child. Praise our Lord! He is forever faithful! He is Love!
Be blessed my fellow mommies! God loves you! He is love.
